Abstract
The global climate and environments are changing constantly. When facing rapidly changing natural disasters, the anticipatory preventions need to be up to date. The majority of disasters in Taiwan have been caused by typhoon and flood in the past 60 years, while 88 percent are from combined disasters of typhoon and flood. Accordingly, Taiwan’s Ministry of Education has implemented disaster prevention (DP) programs aimed to raise the citizens’ level of literacy in handling these disastrous threats and able to gain new knowledges of disasters actively. The method proposed in this research takes the advantages of the Virtual Reality (VR) technology to design a disaster prevention self-organized learning environment (DP-SOLE), which would be suitable in an informal education setting, and hope to result with an entertaining learning outcome through the elevation of specific self-efficacy. A field experiment was conducted by designing 3 sets of learning modules and took place during a summer camp hosted at the Science Museum. By analyzing the data collected from the participants’ survey and assistants’ observations, with a total of 97 students, the results show that by using VR technology modules, it can respond to the learning needs of disaster prevention in both cognition and perception. Moreover, incorporating VR technology modules in DP-SOLE can enhance the self-efficacy of students’ learning, and become an active learning model. This learning mode effectively promotes both subjective and objective learning outcomes, including learning assessments, as well as the measurement of engagement and enjoyment. Hence, integrating VR technology into DP-SOLE is a feasible learning model. In conclusion, the theoretical and practical implications are suggested based on the results of the research, and can be further discussed in the future.
