  • Abstract In this study, we reports on the observation and detailed investigation of the bidirectional random lasing emitted from a dye-doped twisted nematic liquid crystal, of which the polarization states are asymmetric (non-parallel to each other). In such a device, the liquid crystal can be regarded as a random distributed feedback laser cavity with an inherently built-in polarization rotator. While propagating in the laser cavity, the polarizations of the dye-emitted light will follow the gently twisted director axis. The output polarization states are, therefore, parallel to each of the surface alignment directions. The mode stability and electrical switchability of the laser were also examined. Moreover, a clear correlation between the lasing threshold, alignment direction, and dye concentration was established. The findings not only suggest an optimum concentration for low-threshold operations, but also reveal an unforeseen behavior — threshold inversion.
