||This essay examines the interrelations between artist interest and the development of culture and arts in Taiwan. In addition, the relation between the development of the trade union and the structure of artistic society is analyzed from the perspective of the capacity trade union of artists, “artist” in Taiwan was not regarded as a profession. This term was used as a compliment and encouragement to artistic creators more than an “occupation.” Led by Tang Huang-Chen and others, a group of art creators and art workers with different backgrounds gathered to project the establishment of “Taipei Art Trade Union” in 2009. With two years of endeavor and insistence, they gained the rights of getting the recognition of “artist” as an occupation. Moreover, they could establish their trade union, and administer insurance matters. |
However, the consumers’ demand and market orientation affect the job opportunities and working conditions of creators directly or indirectly. The affecting factors include the variables of style, fads, interrelationship, and prestige, which are regarded as the creators’ production tools in the market. Under such circumstances, the M-shaped society of art creators was formed. The artists in Taiwan founded the art creator trade union to safeguard their working interest and social practice as response to the changes in current living conditions and self-awareness for further actions.
Nevertheless, as minorities in society, the trade union alliance and local artists should build up partnerships and common consciousness actively.
