  • Abstract The current study selects stainless steel industry as studying case, analyzing the
    Make-to-order production and the characteristics of job shop production, collecting the
    problems that study case encountered in master production schedule and production
    manufacturing. It is found that the study case still heavily relies on artificial planning,
    Besides that it is not easy for systematization, due to the uncertainty of arrival time of
    order, in order to keep the maximum production efficiency, it has to reschedule
    periodically depending on current and unprocessed orders when necessary. And
    rescheduling due to the change of orders is time-consuming, it will lead to the difficulty
    of handling the states of each station and the long production lead time which will then
    cause the delay of product delivery.
    Regarding the problem of production scheduling of study case, the current study
    uses simulation tool – Arena, by using different dispatching rule for periodic
    rescheduling of orders and commonly used “measure of performance” to validate the
    performance of using different dispatching rule and the order lead time after periodic
    rescheduling. Meanwhile, to find out the best dispatching rule under different conditions
    and establish the optimal model of dispatching schedule of the stations for the study
    case. The experiment results exhibit the Make-to-order production and the job shop
    manufacturing could use different dispatching rule for periodic rescheduling of orders to
    achieve production optimization and output maximization, to make the order deliver on
    time and provide the study case a reference of introducing the study into the master
    production schedule system.
