Abstract
Perfectionism has shown to be associated with students’ academic motivation, self- esteem, and well-being. The current research aimed to explore the relations of undergraduates’ perfectionism (self-oriented perfectionism and other-oriented perfectionism) to their intrinsic and extrinsic academic motivation, self-esteem, and well-being. Participants were four hundred and five undergraduate students at a national university in Southern Taiwan via convenient sampling. Self-reported scales were administrated during class. The results showed that self-oriented perfectionism rather than other-oriented perfectionism was more related to participants’ academic motivation. Both self-oriented perfectionism and other-oriented perfectionism were positively correlated with self-esteem. Participants with higher levels of self-oriented perfectionism reported a greater sense of well-being. However, no significant relationships were found between other-oriented perfectionism and three indicators of well-being. The present findings provide empirical evidence for the connections between perfectionism and three correlates of self-determination theory. With respect to educational implications, this research indicates that self-oriented perfectionism may be helpful in enhancing academic motivation, facilitating self-esteem, and promoting well-being among college students.
