Title Studies on the electrochemical abrasive polishing of cylindrical rod using a conductive polymer tool

  • Abstract In this study, a carbon-fiber-type non-directional conductive polymer (ESD 410C) was employed as a tool electrode to compositely electrolyze and abrasive polish the cylindrical surface of stainless steel workpiece using a horizontal electrochemical abrasive polishing machine self-developed. The effects of alumina abrasive particle size (1 ~ 9 μm), load (0.015 ~ 0.15 N), current (0 ~ 300 mA) and polishing time (0 ~ 10 min) on the surface roughness of workpiece were investigated.
    Experimental results of abrasive polishing showed that the surface roughness Rmax and Ra decreased to 0.215 μm and 0.056 μm, respectively under the load of 0.15 N with the grit size of 3 μm in electrolyte within 8 minutes of polishing time. In electrolysis condition, the surface roughness Rmax and Ra decreased to 0.29 μm and 0.069 μm, respectively under the current of 150 mA in electrolyte, the load of 0.15 N within 10 minutes of polishing time.
    A two-stage electrochemical abrasive polishing process is conducted. In the first stage, the surface roughness Rmax and Ra decreased quickly to 0.237 μm and 0.051 μm, respectively under the load of 0.15 N, with the grit size of 3 μm and a current of 150 mA in electrolyte within 4 minutes of polishing time. In the second stage, Rmax and Ra decreased to 0.132 μm and 0.031 μm, respectively using the abrasive particle size of 1 μm for 6 minutes. A flat shiny surface of stainless steel could be achieved.
    Finally, a two-stage electrochemical abrasive polishing process was conducted to polish the screw workpiece with 2 mm in pitch. In the first stage, the surface of screw workpiece was polished under the load of 0.15 N, with the grit size of 3 μm and a current of 150 mA in electrolyte within 40 cycles of polishing time. In the second stage, the surface roughness Rmax and Ra decreased to 0.12 μm and 0.031 μm, respectively using the abrasive particle size of 1 μm for 100 cycles. A flat shiny surface of stainless steel could also be achieved.
