Recently, the Fe-Mn-Al-C steels have been studied as high strength steel to apply in automobile industry in order to reduce the car weight and gas mileage. Phase diagram and phase transformation knowledge are the basic requirement for the development of the Fe-Mn-Al-C steels. In this study, the phase diagram of Fe-Mn-Al-C was investigated in several isopleths related to the development of high strength steels.
The isopleths were calculated by CALPHAD method first. A series of samples were prepared to check the calculated isopleths and these experiment results were applied to revise the data base. The experiments included equilibrium heat treatment and microstructure analysis using X-ray and electron microprobe (EPMA).
The first part focuses on the phase transformation of Fe-5.3Mn-2.3Al-0.3C alloy steel at 550 and 600 oC under a salt bath experiment. The second part is to study the microstructure and phase diagrams by preparing various contents of aluminum, manganese and carbon content around Fe-5.3Mn-2.3Al-0.3C alloy region.
