  • Abstract 3D stereoscopic display has been a very popular topic recently. With the flourishing development of display technology, applications of 3D stereoscopic video display can be found in versatile domains. This research aims at developing the 3D stereoscopic technology for the ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicles) in order to meet requirements of future missions. It is expected to provide more information about the underwater environment to assist underwater operations of ROVs.
      This paper acquires two sets of parallax images by using dual cameras and converts those images into polarized 3D stereoscopic information via image processing techniques. Then 3D stereoscopic imaging can be implemented with a 3D television screen. This research does not only establish the relationship between the stereo base of a pair of stereoscopic cameras and the shooting distance, but also find the most appropriate stereo base and underwater viewing range based on experiments. In order to simulate limited visible range in underwater environment, a series of experiments on 3D stereoscopic perception in a water tank were conducted. Environmental conditions for better 3D effect but with least dizziness can therefore be experimentally obtained. This achievement provides depth information for underwater objects so that operational performance and efficiency of the unmanned underwater vehicle system can be greatly enhanced.
