  • Abstract Life-cycle assessment (LCA) is essential for any newly developed algae biomass production system since it assesses the environmental impacts of a product throughout using any resources during facility life span which includes from raw material acquisition, via production and use phases, to waste management. Life-cycle assessment is usually evaluated in terms of how efficiency of the net energy ratio (NER) or how significant impact of carbon footprint on the natural environment while producing the biomass. This study focuses on cultivation oil-reach microalgae, CNW-N, by using waste water and CO2 gas delivered from the cylinder tank as the carbon source in outdoor cultural condition. A newly built vertical circular column photobioreactor system was utilized to assess the feasibility of LCA. Preliminary results from outdoor experimental data showed that the productivity of microalgae, CNW-N, could reach as high as 78 mg/L/day. The net energy ratio (NER) for this process was calculated about 5.4%, and it also has negative impact on carbon footprint calculation 4.5%. The environmental footprint and energy required for algae production are mainly caused by using air pumps for pumping mixing air into photobioreactors and the usage of steel material for constructing the culturing platform on the top of fish pond. To reduce these impacts the usage of flue gas and avoid using steel platform are recommended for the future study.
