  • Abstract This work proposes a simple method of fabricating microlens arrays with BPLC material. We first make a concave polymer microlens arrays on the ITO glass and is assembled empty cell with other one ITO glass, the cell gap was separated using 3.5 μm-thick plastic spacers. The chiral LC mixture is injected into empty cell to form BPLC microlens arrays.
      The experimental results showed that the microlens arrays have been fast switched positive and negative focal lengths via controlled the electric fields, and the response time can be up to a few hundred microseconds. Additionally, the focusing efficiency is not affected by the polarization of incident light. By using this method, the BPLC material can be applied in the microlens array device without giving the molecular alignment layer, and therefore it simplifies the fabrication process, and its optically isotropic property also enhances the qualities of polarization independence and fast response.
