  • Abstract LTE/5G MIMO antennas for the 5G smartphone are proposed. In the smartphone’s limited space, the proposed antennas can cover the LTE LB, LTE M/HB and 5G MIMO operation. The first design include three antennas disposed at the short edge of the smartphone. One of the antennas cover the LTE LB, and the other two antennas provide the LTE M/HB operation and the 5G operation in 3300~4200 MHz. The antennas can be used for 2 × 2 LTE M/HB MIMO and 2 × 2 5G MIMO operation. If the same three antennas are disposed at the opposite short edge and with four additional 5G MIMO antennas disposed along the long edge of the smartphone, the antennas can be used for 2 × 2 LTE LB MIMO, 4 × 4 LTE M/HB MIMO and 8 × 8 5G MIMO operation to increase the data throughput in the communication. However, the LTE LB antenna in the first design only covers the low-frequency band below 1 GHz. To achieve the high-dimensional MIMO operation, more antennas in the smartphone need to be implemented; therefore, the LTE LB/5G MIMO antenna is presented for the second design. With the two LTE M/HB antennas covering the 5G band, there are three antennas at the short edge of the smartphone to cover 3300~4200 MHz for 5G operation. Details of the proposed first and second antenna design are presented.
