  • Abstract Internal waves are frequently observed in the Dongsha Atoll vicinity in the northwestern South China Sea. The internal wave may induce vertical mixing to entrain cold nutrient rich water from lower layer to the subsurface layer to enhance the photosynthesis resulting high concentration of chlorophyll. This study try to look at the relationship of biomass and hydrographic variation applying multiple sets of data, including OR3 cruises data of hydrographic and zooplankton, MODIS chlorophyll data, long-term temperature and sea level records at Dongsha, and zooplankton from towing nets inside the atoll.
    The OR3 cruises data showed that internal wave of depression may push surface warm water down to 100 m that the layer of chlorophyll maximum shifted from subsurface to the deeper water. Combining MODIS data and ground measurements, data analysis showed that cold water lagged spring tide by 4 days. The chlorophyll concentration increase required two more days after cold water occurred, consequently, the biomass of zooplankton took 3 days to reach the peak value.
