  • Abstract Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art that is rapidly gaining popularity around the world along with mixed martial arts (MMA), a professional sport that incorporates striking arts such as kickboxing with ground fighting techniques. This case study takes an in-depth look at Danimal BJJ- Kaohsiung, a small foreign owned business in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. In its first few years of operation, it has managed to grow from fifteen to over fifty members paying monthly gym fees for their martial arts training. Although the gym has not lost money, its current level of profit is quite low, and does not warrant to time and energy put into it by the ownership.
This case study includes a financial analysis of the past two years to show that the current rate of return is decidedly low, and must be increased. Through a SWOT analysis, this case study formulates specific strategies to efficiently and effectively raise funds. This research also proposes financial projections through 2020, based on the assumed success of the financial strategies. Finally, in an effort to justify the involvement of outside investors, this case study presents literature which shows that the fitness industry in Taiwan is on a current trend of increased profitability, and that BJJ is growing in worldwide popularity.
