  • Abstract The design of fourth-generation (4G) long-term evolution (LTE) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antennas integrated with fifth-generation (5G) band for the 5G smartphone is presented. The antennas can be applied in high screen-to-body ratio phones with 0.8-mm wide ground clearance and can cover 4G LTE and 5G bands at the same time. There are three antennas at the top edge of the smartphone. From the left to the right are Ant2, Ant1 and Ant3. Ant2 operates in 1500~2700/3300~4200 MHz. It consists of a parasitic monopole antenna on-frame with a parallel distributed capacitor connected to the front plane, a parasitic monopole strip antenna, and a driven monopole strip antenna with a feed network. The distributed capacitor can shift the higher-order resonance modes of the parasitic monopole on-frame antenna to the 5G band in 3300~4200 MHz. The structure of Ant3 is similar to that of Ant2, but Ant3 operates in 1710~2700/3300~4200 MHz. The decoupling between Ant2 and Ant3 is achieved using the on-frame radiator of Ant1 as a decoupling structure. Besides, Ant1 consists of two inverted-F antennas: the first one with a band-pass matching circuit for LTE LB operation and the second one for 5G band operation. Ant1, Ant2 and Ant3 together can provide one Global Positioning System (GPS), one LTE LB, two LTE middle/high bands (M/HB) and three 5G bands. Details of the antenna structures and operating principle of Ant1, Ant2 and Ant3 are described. In addition, the simulated and measured results of the antennas are analyzed and discussed.
