  • Abstract In this letter, we demonstrate a way to make liquid crystal-filled hollow-core optical fibers with silica glass cladding and metal electrodes embedded between cladding and coating. We embed the electrode in the fiber by using vapor deposition and this way not only greatly reduce the volume of the electrode, but also simplify the postprocess. Among the many electro-optic material, we choose liquid crystal as the material of embedded electrode optical fiber core and doped with other material to reduce the refractive index of the core.If some voltage isapplied to the electrode, the nematic LC director aligns along the direction of the applied electric field and breaks the total reflection rules. So that the light in the core will refract to the cladding and the power of the core will decrease about 50% to 70%. Furthermore, the technique can be applicable to make other electro-optic materials core optical fibers with metal-embedded electrodes, which could potentially enable many electrically tunable fiber devices along with the unique property of the electro-optic materials core.
