  • Abstract For eight-band LTE/WWAN operation in the tablet communication devices (tablet computer and phablet), a planar antenna of small size and simple structure is presented. The antenna is printed on a thin FR4 substrate of small size 45 × 10 mm2 with a simple uniplanar structure which is promising for tablet computer and phablet. The proposed antenna mainly comprises an inverted-F antenna and a parasitic shorted strip. The antenna can cover the LTE700/GSM850/900 operation by modifying the distributed parallel-resonant circuit embedded therein, which can result in dual-resonance excitation of the antenna’s fundamental resonant mode such that bandwidth enhancement is obtained for the antenna’s lower band. On the other hand, the antenna’s upper-band bandwidth is also greatly enhanced by using a coupled section in the antenna’s radiating strip and adding a parasitic shorted strip, which leads to multiple resonant modes excited to form a wide bandwidth to cover the GSM1800/1900/UMTS/LTE2300/2500 operation. Owing to its small size and simple structure, the proposed antenna is very suitable to be applied in achieving an antenna array with high isolation for MIMO operation. Finally, bending effects of the flexible phablet on the radiation characteristics of the antenna are studied.
