  • Abstract In this thesis, a ground antenna is presented for applications in slim handheld communication devices to cover LTE/WWAN operation. The antenna has a very small size, yet can provide two wide operating bands with the aid of a wideband matching circuit. By combining the design concept of switchable or reconfigurable antennas, it is promising for the proposed antenna to have two feeds connected to respective switch elements (for example, a PIN diode) to independently control the antenna‚Äôs low-band and high-band operation. One embodiment of the proposed antenna can cover the GSM1800/1900/UMTS/LTE2300/2500 (1710~2690 MHz) bands when operated in the high band, and can cover the GSM850/900 (824 ~960 MHz) bands when operated in the low band. The antenna occupies a size of 10 x 20 mm2 only. Such a small antenna can be considered to combine with the device system ground plane to form an asymmetric dipole structure, and hence can be treated as a ground antenna structure. In addition to analyze the antenna structure and the obtained radiation of the antenna characteristics, an antenna array formed using the proposed antenna is also tested. The SAR and HAC of near-field effects of the antenna on human body are also studied.
