  • Abstract The hybrid inverted-F/half-loop antennas for the metal-framed/metal-casing smartphone are provided. The first design uses metal strips printed on the inner surface of the short-edge frame of the metal-framed smartphone as the antenna’s radiator. By connecting a feed network to the on-frame metal strips, an inverted-F antenna resonant mode and a half-loop antenna resonant mode can be generated. With a low profile of 3 mm, the antenna can cover the LTE band of 824~960/1710~2690 MHz and the GPS band 1575 MHz with the aid of the matching circuit in the feed network. The second design uses metal frame section of the metal-casing smartphone as the antenna’s radiator. By using an elevated feed circuit board connected to the metal frame section, both a half-loop antenna resonant mode and an inverted-F antenna resonant mode can also be obtained. The feed circuit board with the feed network disposed thereon does not occupy the planar space on the metal casing. In this case, with a narrow metal clearance of 2 mm, the antenna can provide two wide bands of 824~960/1710~2690 MHz for the LTE operation. Details of the two proposed antennas are presented, and there operating principle and experimental results are presented and discussed.
