  • Abstract Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) plays an important role in smart grids. Data Concentrator Unit (DCU), used to collect data from smart meter of customers and transmit them to Meter Database Management System (MDMS) regularly, is the core component in AMI. If DCU can provide more advanced two-way communication and distributed computing, more efficient energy management can be achieved. Therefore, this thesis focuses on designing and developing value-added functionalities for DCU. The value-added functionalities designed in this thesis include IEC 61850 communication protocol and electricity theft detection system. The proposed electricity theft detection system utilizes the collected customer power consumption data to calculate the electricity theft probability index. The possible electricity thefts can then be found out. A windows-based Human-Machine Interface (HMI) for remote electricity supervisory system using Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) is also implemented. The windows-based HMI is used to acquire and monitor the collected data in the proposed value-added functionalities of DCU. An experimental DCU platform is designed to realize the proposed value-added functionalities and to simulate the feasibility of the electricity theft probability index. Besides a commercialized software is used to verify the consistency of IEC 61850 communication protocol implemented in the proposed DCU.
