  • Abstract Liu Tan is one of the famous scholars in the Easten Jin Dynasty. He has a special personality and an outstanding talent in Qingtan. In politics, he governs nothing. His image is vivid among scholars in Wei Jin Dynasty. He is recorded frequently in about sixty nine short stories in Shi Shuo Xin Yu, a classical novel in Chinese literature, only less than Hsien An, Wang Tao and Huan Wen. Liu Tan indicates contemporary culture and fashion.
However, there is a little reserch on Liu Tan. No books focus on this character completely, but only a short article does.Though some books mention Liu Tan partly, they can’t totally reveal this character. Moreover, many doubts about Liu Tan exist, such as his name and his family background.
This thesis is trying to analyze Liu Tan’s life time, and explain his family background, politics, Qingtan and interaction with friends. Liu Tan’s value in the history will be displayed, and his personal attractiveness will be shown. Furthermore, this thesis can also shed some light on life style, thinking, and culture in the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
