  • Abstract The purpose of this paper is to investigate which factors will have an impact on the firm decisions of making Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) investments. We collect data from 2006 to 2015 of the listed companies in Taiwan, totally 10210 firm-year observations. Our results show that larger firms, more profitable firms, firms in a more competitive industry, and firms with higher advertising expenditure ratios are more likely to invest in CSR. In addition, firms with better corporate governance mechanisms will demonstrate better CSR performance. Finally, we find a positive connection between the educational level of the chairperson, the level of the media coverage surrounding the firm and its chairperson, and the level of CSR performance of the firm. These results suggest that media exposure and the personal background of the firm leaders will both affect their decisions of making socially responsible investments.
