  • Abstract Four LTE MIMO antennas in the smartphone for application in the 4 x 4 MIMO system are presented. The four antennas are based on the open-slot antenna structure and disposed along the short edges and the long side-edges of the smartphone. The two short-edge antennas can cover 698~960 MHz. The two long side-edge antennas have a low profile of only 1-mm ground clearance and can cover 824~960 MHz. The two side-edge antennas are suitable to be disposed in the current narrow-framed smartphone. The two short-edge antennas can be applied in a 2 x 2 LTE MIMO operation in the 698~960 MHz band. On the other hand, the four antennas can be applied in a 4 x 4 LTE MIMO operation in the 824~960 MHz band. The calculated channel capacities of the 4 x 4 LTE MIMO operation can reach about 17.6 bps/Hz at 20-dB signal-to-noise ratio. The effects of user’s hand on the MIMO performance are also studied, and both one-hand data mode and two-hand data mode are considered. The results of antenna efficiencies and channel capacities for different handheld situations are presented and discussed.
