  • Abstract With the rise of globalization, interactions among nations the economic, political, cultural and other aspects have become more frequent. In addition to the cooperation of governments, public diplomacy has emerged as well.
    Confucius Institute is one of the most important practices of China’s public diplomacy in recent years. Confucius Institute, affiliated with Hanban, is an international organization to promote Chinese language and culture. Confucius Institute promotes Chinese culture through the language to let the world know and understand China. Confucius Institute expands China's influence over the world, trying to convey an image of "peaceful rise".
    In the study, this author takes the perspective of public diplomacy to analyze how the Confucius Institute works in public diplomacy and plays the role of China’s public diplomacy and what kinds of difficulties Confucius Institute will confront. The study finds the Confucius Institute in China's public diplomacy has generated the following three effects: firstly, the Confucius Institute can promotes Chinese culture by its language, as a connection with foreign countries. Secondly, the Confucius Institute has a linkage with the Chinese Confucian image and national image, which is conducive to create a peace the image of China. Thirdly, the Confucius Institute can turn national cultural into national soft power. China's soft power is expected to be improved by Confucius Institute.
    Confucius Institute’s difficulties may come from some reasons: firstly, shaping the country's image, the Confucius Institute is also caused by China's national image of the stereotype at the same time. Secondly, cultural difference becomes the difficulty in cross-cultural activities in public diplomacy. Thirdly, current international communication environment is not conducive to China, which will also affect the result of the practices of China’s public diplomacy.
