This study about studentification focuses on two main research questions. The first question is concerned with evidence for studentification in Nottingham. The second question builds on that and asks for the impact studentification has in Nottingham. To provide satisfactory answers to both questions, the research is built on a broad base of different sources. To identify evidence of studentification, the researcher uses census records as well as data provided by the Nottingham City Council. By using this technique, three wards with elevated student numbers could be identified. Further observation in those wards showed that studentification is indeed present in Nottingham. As a next step the author of this paper set up a series of interviews with key informants to explore different viewpoints about the issue at hand. To ensure the results are as representative as possible, students, landlords, council officials as well as representatives of action groups have been interviewed. As a third effort to triangulate the results, the researcher uses descriptive sources, such as local newspaper articles, to capture more facets of studentification and its effects in Nottingham.

This study concludes that those wards in Nottingham which have already been studentified are fairly unlikely to become de-studentified in the near future. However, because of the initiatives and policies set out by the Nottingham City Council, it seems that wards which have not yet been studentified will remain residential neighbourhoods. In addition to the Council’s policies, another reason for this development is the increasing number of bed spaces in purpose built student accommodations being constructed in the city centre and the popularity of this kind of accommodation amongst a growing number of students.
