Abstract
The importance of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) has become increasingly recognized and many international postgraduate study programs nowadays set the focus on gaining intercultural awareness and sensitivity by including cultural exposure in the curriculum. Being exposed to other cultures can happen to various extents such as time spent abroad and/or within an international class or lectures on cultural differences. While previous studies in that field have focused on quantitative research measuring the influence of international exposure on CQ, especially in the workplace environment, little attention has been paid yet to the self-assessment of experiential learning. This study sought to extend the literature by investigating how Austrian business students experience the process of cultural learning while studying abroad in an international class. Conducted qualitative research by means of interviews illustrates how students enrolled in an international Master program experience learning about other cultures more intensively by adding an individualized touch to it through establishing intercultural friendships and thus, getting a broader understanding of other cultures. Results of the interviews have been contrasted to a comparison group of similar educational background. The study reveals that students experience a mix of theory- and practice-based cultural learning as highly beneficial, no matter which study program they have opted for. Outcomes of the conducted interviews suggest that international exposure in the form of intercultural relationships and group work in culturally mixed teams are the most effective way of intercultural learning. Experiences made during a longer period of time spent abroad not only motivate students but also help to retain knowledge about other cultures in the long run.
